CHARLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — With colder air expected to settle across the Carolinas early next week, home heating systems will likely be running longer  and that can lead to higher energy bills. Piedmont Natural Gas says there are several simple steps customers can take now to save money while staying warm.

Piedmont recommends setting thermostats to the lowest comfortable temperature. Using a smart or programmable thermostat can automatically reduce energy use while residents are asleep or away from home.

Taking advantage of sunlight can also help cut costs. Leaving blinds or curtains open during sunny winter days allows natural heat to warm a home. Closing them at night helps prevent heat from escaping through windows.

Routine maintenance is another way to save. Changing air filters regularly helps heating systems run more efficiently, reducing energy use. Dirty filters force systems to work harder, which can drive up costs.

Water heating is another major expense. Piedmont suggests setting water heater temperatures to 120 degrees. Homeowners may also consider on-demand or tankless water heaters, which only heat water when needed.

Sealing drafts can result in significant savings. Caulking, sealing and weather-stripping cracks and openings can reduce heating and cooling costs by as much as 10% to 20%. Ensuring air ducts are properly sealed is also important, as leaks into attics or crawl spaces can significantly increase energy bills.

Adding insulation to ceilings, floors or walls can further reduce energy demand, helping homes stay warmer while lowering monthly costs.

Piedmont Natural Gas says it offers online tools to help customers better understand and manage their natural gas use. Customers can view monthly usage history through their online accounts to spot trends and identify savings opportunities.

The company’s Energy Advisor tool provides a personalized look at a home’s energy efficiency and highlights areas for improvement. Online calculators also allow customers to estimate annual energy costs related to water heating, cooking and clothes drying.
