Humpday Health: Skip the gym and head to Zumba class

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Zumba is a fun and cheap way to get your body moving and burn a few calories.

We dropped in on a local class to check out what it’s all about.

“My Zumba class is very upbeat, dancey, loud. We woo-hoo and shake our booties,” said Karson Reed, a local Zumba instructor.

Class is in session at Karson Reed’s DanceFit & Fun in Wilmington.

Zumba class, that is, and the air is filled with music and a lot of fun.

At just $7 per class, it’s a cheap way to burn a few calories without going to the gym.

“We burn anywhere between five hundred and a thousand calories. It depends on what your skill level is. If you’re a beginner, it’s probably gonna be around the five hundred until you learn the dances, then you can get up to about a thousand calories,” said Reed.

Anywhere from ten to thirty people show up to Reed’s class.

She says they always give newcomers a warm welcome.

“I always tell people when they first come in. It is a little, it gets a little intimidating because you think everybody’s been dancing forever, but after about your third class, you catch on and you can start burning those calories up,” said Reed.

You don’t have to be a world class dancer to fit in.

“People usually say, ‘I have no rhythm, I can’t do it.’ And I also don’t think that is true. I think that if you love music, if you love movement, you can pick it up and do it,” said Reed.

Reed teaches classes five days a week, so go ahead and sign up, if you want to skip the gym, while still getting a good workout.
