Humpday Health: Spin class is a fast, fun workout
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Are you looking for a fast paced workout that is fun and will get you into shape? On this week’s Humpday Health we have what you’re looking for and it’s right here in Wilmington.
Amy Westbrook is one of many fitness instructors at the YMCA and she says if you want to burn 150 to 600 calories in a fun way, the spin class is for you.
“I have people that are very young, that are still in high school and all the way up, like seniors that come in and spin with me,” Westbrook said. “It might be for a new beginner that’s looking to get more active, or someone that’s training for a triathlon or some sort of race.”
In addition to wearing hard sole shoes, bring water and a towel. Westbrook says you have to be ready to work.
“This class is going to be a challenging class that will be really good cardio,” Westbrook said. “It can help you build muscle, become stronger or build your endurance.
This class is no joke; you are really working hard for this hour long course. But Westbrook says that it’s important to go at your own pace.
“Don’t be upset if you can’t stay the whole class,” Westbrook said. “Come in and do what you can do.
For those people in the class, they say it’s fun and a really great way to get moving.
“Spin is great, I’m so much stronger, my cardiovascular is so much more, wakes me up, makes me feel alive and appreciate every day,” Eugenio Gonzalez, a participant in the class, said. “I work late, I don’t get home until two in the morning and I still drag my butt in here so if I can do it others can do it too.”
I decided to take up Eugenio on that, I jumped in the saddle and gave it a shot.
“You looked really good,” Westbrook said. “You were listening to my cues; you were listening to what I asked for. You actually pushed yourself more than others do on their first ride so I thought that was awesome.”
Let’s just say I may need a couple more classes before I can get to the level of others.
