Lightning strike damages historic courthouse

WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — Lightning struck the historic New Hanover County Courthouse earlier this month, causing about $70,000 worth of damage, county officials said.
The strike happened during a strong storm in the late afternoon of Aug. 3, said Mark Boyer, interim chief communications officer. He said employees found the next morning that several pieces of electronic equipment, including four studio-quality television cameras, were not working.
The bolt also damaged the building’s air conditioning system, closed captioning equipment, security cameras used by the sheriff’s office and “blew out” two telephones, Boyer said.
