Man killed at Fayetteville homeless shelter

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) — Authorities say a 63-year-old man staying at a Fayetteville homeless shelter has been killed by a former resident.

Police said in a news release that Ricky Dale Penny was killed by blows to the head. His body was found outside the New Life Mission around 7:15 a.m. Saturday.

Later that day, investigators say they arrested 33-year-old Antonio Cooper and charged him with first-degree murder.

Police didn’t give a motive for the killing.

Authorities are asking the public to help police find Penny’s family.

Cooper is being held without bond at the Cumberland County jail and it wasn’t known if he had a lawyer to speak on his behalf.
