National Weather Service of Wilmington hosts open house for first time in 3 decades
WILINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The community got the rare opportunity over the weekend to get a first-hand look at how our local weather is forecasted.
The National Weather Service of Wilmington hosted an open house on Saturday for the first time in three decades.
The event was a combination of outdoor activities and guided tours through the NWS office, with the purpose of strengthening partnerships and sharing NWS capabilities and services with the communities we serve.
There were several vendors at the event who all work as a unit to provide weather information to the Cape Fear including the NWS Staff, New Hanover County Emergency Management, the Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross, Wrightsville Beach Water Rescue, and our very own WWAY StormTrack3 Weather Team.
The NWS offered tours of the office to the community to give a glimpse of how they forecast our daily weather from temperatures to hurricanes.
“Thirty years since we’ve had an event and opened our doors and had the community come in and check out our operations and do things day to day. Lot of people interested in weather. We wanted to get them out and be a part of what we do here. We loved having everybody out today,” said Jordan Baker, NWS Meteorologist.
More than 200 people came out for the event.
With lots of positive feedback from the attendees, the office plans to do more in the future.
