GREENSBORO, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear is celebrating a state champion in track and field from New Hanover High School.

New Hanover’s Cashmere James is the NCHSAA 4A State Champion in the 400 meter dash. James also broke the all-time North Carolina state record that was set back all the way in 1983, finishing with a time of 46.20. James also placed 3rd in the 100 and 200. That 400 time is top ten nationally this year.

James said his state championship didn’t come without hard work and a little bit of motivation from his junior season.

“Yeah junior year I just, it came right down to it, I just wasn’t fast enough and I worked hard to get faster. I just want to thank my coaches and you know, they helped me along the way. My aunt, she has always been by my side throughout the whole process and yeah, I’m just grateful for them and my teammates,” James said.

James is now currently training for the Adidas Track Nationals in June that takes place in Greensboro as well.
