NWS confirms EF-0 tornado Saturday in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) —  The National Weather Service says a tornado did touch down Saturday in Brunswick County.

A storm survey today confirmed the EF-0 tornado near Sandy Creek after WWAY talked with a homeowner who said the storm hit her property.

“My first initial reaction before I got here, my mom wouldn’t answer her phone, so it kinda scared me,” Elizabeth Mintz said.

Mintz said a tree fell on her fence and knocked out power. The storm also destroyed a swing set, moved a small trailer across the yard, tore shingles from the roof and knocked branches off trees.

“A lot of people think this can’t really happen to them,” Mintz said Sunday. “But I mean it could happen anywhere, any time. You know just be prepared whenever they send out the warnings.”

An EF-0 tornado has winds of 65-85 mph.

Saturday’s storm system produced several warnings for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, but little damage was reported.
