CAPE FEAR, NC (WWAY) — A large geomagnetic storm allowed for parts of the United States that don’t typically see the aurora borealis catch a glimpse.
Forecasters say there is potential for better viewing of the auroras Wednesday night with another solar outburst expected.
To view the aurora, it is best to be in a dark area away from city lights and look north. If you can’t see it with the naked eye, try to take a picture using a smartphone camera. You can also use nightmode on the camera as well.
Aurora displays are commonly visible near the poles which is where charged particles from the sun interact with Earth’s atmosphere.
Recently, the sun as released several bursts of energy called coronal mass ejections, two of which reached earth.
