LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WWAY) — A popular non-profit is making its way to Bladen and Columbus County for the very first time.

Pop Warner Little Scholars will be coming to both counties and will be hosting youth football and cheer leading. The team name will be named the Carolina Cubs and games along with practices, will be held at East Columbus Jr/Sr High School. Ages for football will be 5-13, with cheer leading being 3-13. Sign ups are available now for players, with a need for cheer leading and football coaches as well.

According to Katrina Brown, CEO of the Carolina Bengals, a minor league football team; and East Columbus Head Football Coach Doug Skipper, say it’s great for the community.

“So, instead of the kids having to travel towards Lumberton or Leland to be able to play, we wanted to bring those opportunities home in the community. Try to get some of the comradery back in the community,” said Brown, who’s minor league team helped found the Pop Warner team.

“So, I’m excited what we can develop here as a community, as a football program, as a school. Now giving more knowledge and playing more and just build a football town,” said Skipper, who will help coach and mentor the program.
