Red Cross: Be prepared, no matter the storm’s track
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Red Cross is reminding citizens that no matter what Hurricane Joaquin does as it heads north, you need to be prepared before the storm.
Disaster Specialist James Jarvis said having an emergency preparedness kit, having a plan in case of emergency and staying up-to-date on all of the latest reports are the three most important things to do in these situation. He said to always err on the side of caution in potentially dangerous situations.
“I think the biggest thing that people need to remember is that this is going to create a lot of rain,” Jarvis said. “And with a lot of rain comes a lot of flooding. If they encounter a road that’s flooded or they’re walking and they encounter grounds that are flooded, six inches of water can sweep you off your feet. If you encounter a road that’s flooded it’s best to turn around and don’t drown.”
Jarvis also said to have non-perishable food items and one gallon of water per day per person ready in case of an emergency.
