WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington residents taking advantage of some nice weather and new tennis courts this weekend.

The Althea Gibson Tennis Complex reconstruction project was completed this week and re-opened to the public on Thursday. Courts 1-8 were reconstructed, as well as being equipped with new fencing, nets and more seating.

Dozens of residents took to the new courts on Saturday, trying them out in competitive matches with friends. Anissa King, a local Wilmington resident and tennis player said she’s happy to see the courts re-opened.

“The courts are great. We’re excited that they’re finally finished after a few months of not being able to use them. We’re excited that we have all these extra courts,” King explained.

Back in 2022, Wilmington City Council unanimously voted for a $250,000 grant to go towards reconstructing 8 of the original courts.
