Southeastern NC weather set multiple records in 2016

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Now that 2016 has come and gone, there were definitely a number of weather events for the record books over the year.

It was a pretty active year weather wise and it started in January when some areas briefly saw light snow.

Meteorological winter (December through February) was the 5th wettest ever in Wilmington.

Wilmington recorded its 4th warmest March ever. Although quiet weather persisted most of the month of April, an EF-1 tornado touched down near the landfall community in early May.

The Carolinas were affected by five tropical cyclones or their remnants, first starting with Bonnie in May which dropped over 5 inches in Holden Beach. Tropical Storm Colin impacted the area in June.

We had a long streak of unusually persistent heat developed in July. In fact, all-time records were broken for the most consecutive days with low temperatures 70 degrees or warmer in Wilmington for a total of 58 days.

Meteorological summer temperatures (June through August) were the 3rd hottest ever in Wilmington.

Hurricane Matthew was likely the most memorable weather event bringing up to 18 inches to the area and disastrous river flooding.

2016 was the 9th hottest year in the Port City.
