Spieth tries for third leg of Grand Slam as ‘Gramps’ watches from Hampstead
HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — Professional golfer Jordan Spieth may be in Scotland chasing his dream of a Grand Slam at the British Open, but right here in the Cape Fear someone very dear to Spieth is cheering him on from his living room in Hampstead.
Spieth has already brought home victories at the Masters and the US Open, and now his sights are set on the British Open. After a bit of a comeback Sunday, he just might make that dream a reality this week on the Old Course at St. Andrews.
“Every time I count him out, he counts himself in,” Spieth’s grandfather Bob Julius, who lives in Hampstead. said Sunday while watching his grandson rally to the top of the leader board. “He doesn’t like to be down. He likes to win.”
Win or lose Julius is proud of his grandson. He describes the feeling as… well… indescribable.
“You can’t believe it,” Julius said. “You can’t know it. It’s a different feeling when you’re there when he wins, too.”
And although he wasn’t able to go to this tournament the pair did share a special moment before Spieth hopped on a plane for the UK.
“Oh, he just said, ‘Gramps, I love you,’ and he left the locker room at the John Deere (Classic in Illinois), and we hugged and he left,” Julius said.
And maybe that hug will prove as a good luck charm moving into the final day of the British Open.
After a rain delay set back play Saturday, the British Open will finish out Monday.
Julius says he completely believes Spieth will come home with the win needing just next month’s PGA Championship to round out the Grand Slam.
