Swimming advisory issued for part of ocean area in Oak Island

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — State recreational water quality officials are advising swimmers and surfers to use caution after floodwaters were pumped into the ocean near Crowell Street in Oak Island.
Recent heavy rains caused flooding in streets, yards, and homes across Oak Island and nearby communities. To reduce damage and maintain access for emergency vehicles, the town began pumping floodwater into the surf.
Officials say the discharged water may contain pollutants, including waste from wildlife and pets, oil and gasoline from parking lots, and waste from septic systems or sewers. While the notice does not confirm the presence of disease-causing organisms, officials warn there is an increased risk of contamination that could cause health issues.
Signs have been placed at the discharge site to alert the public of the potential risk. They will remain posted until 24 hours after pumping stops. State officials will also notify the public once the signs are removed.
