Tandem surfing added to local surf contest

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Although the wave conditions might not have been ideal, but the weather was beautiful for the annual Wrightsville Beach Wahine Classic this weekend.

The all female surf contest was held just south of the Crystal Pier where women of all ages showed their stuff and competed for the top spot.

Emery Castor says her first contest was the Wahine Classic last year and was so glad to be back out to the event this year.

Castor says she loves the surfing because it’s difference than other sports.

“It’s an individual sport so I can just depend on myself and you get to just show yourself and show what you can do on a wave. It’s what the Earth is giving you so it’s really cool,” says Castor.

More than 100 ladies surfed in the 2-day event.

This year tandem surfing was added to the competition which means two surfers share the same board.

The contest also had traditional categories including longboarding, shortboarding and paddlesurfing.
