#TBT: Wilmington’s very own Santa Claus

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Port City was once home to one of Santa’s helpers. James Edward Lee Wade held a number of titles throughout his life, but perhaps one of those he is most fondly remembered for is Santa Claus.

Wade was involved in local government for decades. He was elected to the City Council in 1920 and then to the State General Assembly in 1923 and 1925. He even served as mayor. mayor.

Around the city he was known as “Hi Buddy” because that is how he addressed everyone he met.

Wade brought Christmas to life for the folks in Wilmington, dressing up as St. Nick year after year. He would meet with children and ride in the holiday parade. He even had a special license plate for his holiday alter ego sporting the name SANTA-C.

**Special thanks to the Cape Fear Museum.**
