Topsail High Schools Wrestling Head Coach removed from his position

TOPSAIL, NC (WWAY) — In Pender County, a high school wrestling coach has been removed from his position.
Pete Smith as been Topsail High Schools Wrestling Head Coach since 20-21. Smith was named Mideastern Conference Coach of the Year for the 2022-2023 wrestling season. This year, four wrestlers from the program qualified for state championships, with one wrestler becoming a second-time state champion.
Many parents from the Topsail wrestling community were confused by the move, with many messaging WWAY with their concerns.
A statement on the matter from Pender County Schools says,
“Pender County Schools is aware of the concerns surrounding the wrestling coach at Topsail High School, and we understand the significance of this issue within our community. While we cannot discuss specific personnel matters publicly, we want to assure you that personnel decisions are made with careful consideration and in accordance with established procedures and policy. We understand and recognize the dedication of the parents and community members who support the wrestling program at Topsail High School.”
No specific reason for Smith’s removal as head coach as been given at this time.
