Erika weakens into trough of low pressure

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As of 9:30 this morning, Erika degenerates to a trough of low pressure. The remnants of Erika is located 130 miles east of Camaguey Cuba moving west-northwest at 22 mph. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph.

The remnants are expected to move west-northwestward near the coast of central and eastern Cuba over the near 24 hours and should reach the southeastern portion of Gulf of Mexico in about 36 hours. After that time, a more northward motion is expected over the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

Models suggests that the current strong wind shear could relax by the time the system reaches the Gulf of Mexico, and there is a possibility that Erika could regenerate, but regardless locally heavy rains and gusty winds should spread across portions of Cuba, the Bahamas, and southern Florida during the next couple of days.

At this time all coastal watches and warnings are discontinued.

If the system tracks more to the east we could see some rain late next week from Erika, but a more westerly track will keep impacts away.
