Tropical Storm Fred forms in eastern Atlantic Ocean


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As of early Saturday morning, Tropical Storm Fred formed off the western coast of Africa. Fred is currently 80 miles east-northeast of Praia in the Cape Verde Islands. Maximum sustained winds are at 70 mph and Fred is moving northwest at 15 mph.

National Hurricane Center expects strengthening overnight, and Fred is forecast to become a hurricane before reaching the Cape Verde Islands on Monday.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Cape Verde Islands.

At this time, Fred is expected to not impact the United States.
