UNCW Softball celebrates 40 years of the program during alumni weekend

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW Softball got a blast from the past this weekend celebrating their alumni at Boseman Field.

In honor of celebrating 40 years of UNCW Softball, the program honored their past and future in many different ways. Softball alumni were invited for a tailgate before the game against the College of Charleston on Saturday. Many alumni from different years all gathered to have food and drinks, catch up with one another, and were acknowledged on the field before the game. To add to the nostalgia, the softball team wore their throwback uniforms, with the jerseys being auctioned off during the game with all proceeds benefiting the softball program.

“It’s absolutely nuts compared to what we had, compared to what they’re dealing with now, I mean it’s just gorgeous,” said UNCW Softball alumni Amy Utberg.

“Yeah I mean, the field itself is pristine, its professional level. The batting area is beautiful I mean, I was talking to her (Utberg), we use to do our indoor practices upstairs at Hanover Hall,” said Norma Warwick, another alumni.

Utberg and Warwick both threw out the opening pitch together before the game, which UNCW won 8-3.

“I defiantly miss the relationships with the girls and our team, the atmosphere. It’s a family, its a sisterhood so continuing that on as alumni is important to us too,” said Janel Gamache, another softball alumni who graduated from UNCW last year.
