UNCW strong again in NCAA’s APR Report
WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) — – The NCAA’s 14th round of Academic Progress Rates (APR) confirms that UNCW’s student-athletes continue to excel at a high rate academically.
The report comes one week after UNCW’s baseball, women’s tennis, men’s soccer, women’s swimming, men’s golf and volleyball teams earned Public Recognition Awards for placing among the top 10 percent nationally in the classroom in the multi-year calculation for their sports.
“The latest APR scores show that our student-athletes are dedicated to their academic pursuits,” said Jimmy Bass, UNCW’s seventh-year athletic director. “They have attained a difficult balance between their academic work and competitive lifestyles. We applaud them for their efforts.”
Every NCAA Division I team calculates its APR based on the eligibility, graduation and retention of each scholarship student-athlete. Teams scoring below certain thresholds can face consequences, such as practice restrictions and restrictions on postseason competition. Rates are based on the past four years’ performance and the most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on the scores from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.
In the NCAA’s high-profile sports, the average four-year APR for men’s basketball is 966, up two points from last year, and women’s basketball increased by two points as well to 980.
According to Wednesday’s APR figures, 26 teams will be ineligible for the 2017-18 postseason, compared with 23 teams in 2016-17. Overall, 31 teams are facing penalties, including restrictions on practice and regular season competition, and other sanctions.
The NCAA provides APR adjustments for student-athletes who transfer to another four-year school after earning a 2.6 grade point average and those who leave in good academic standing for professional careers.
Twelve of UNCW’s 18 teams in the report achieved a perfect APR score of 1,000 for 2015-16. Teams that reached perfection include baseball, men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s soccer, men’s track and field, women’s cross country, women’s golf, women’s beach volleyball, women’s swimming, women’s tennis, women’s track and field and volleyball.
