Visual tracking team assists in finding missing woman

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — We’re learning more about the Brunswick County team who assisted in finding a missing Columbus County woman.

Mary Jane Smith’s husband reported her missing Monday. Smith was later found on Tuesday.

Emily Flax, a spokeswoman for the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, said their Visual Tracking Team went through three weeks of intensive training before the team was established.

“Any time that we have someone go missing, any time we have a wanted subject, these guys are the ones that we’re going to call in,” Flax said.

“This team is incredibly meticulous. They’re very concise … They rely on their senses, what they see, what they hear.”

Flax also wants to urge caregivers of folks who have Alzheimer’s or Dementia or a child with autism or a cognitive disorder to sign up for Project Lifesaver through the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.
