Thursday night high school football

videoSeveral local high school football teams decided to play on Thursday in order to avoid the chance of playing in wet conditions on Friday. The weather forecast on Friday is scattered storms around the region. Regardless, we had our cameras out and about on Thursday.

Changes at the top on Bald Head Island?

Residents and former employees said they are fed up with the way Peck has been running Bald Head Island and plan to ask for Peck to go.

Judge agrees to delay in Cannon sentencing

A federal judge has agreed to delay sentencing for former Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon in his public corruption case.

Area media outlets report the hearing is now scheduled for Oct. 14. U.S. District Judge Frank Whitney agreed Thursday to a defense request to move the hearing from Sept. 25 so a New York psychiatrist can testify in Cannon’s behalf.

Captured fugitive returns to NC after 1973 escape

Investigators arrested Carnes in Waterloo, Iowa, in April after facial recognition technology suggested that he applied for Iowa driver’s licenses under two identities. They soon learned Carnes was wanted for escaping from prison in Huntersville, North Carolina, in August 1973, when he was serving time for the 1970 armed robbery of a convenience store.

Man wanted in North Carolina arrested in Arizona

Authorities in southern Arizona say they have arrested a fugitive who’s wanted in North Carolina for kidnapping and indecent liberties with a child.

Pima County Sheriff’s officials say the Concord Police Department in North Carolina asked them to find 21-year-old Lindon Claridge, who reportedly was living in Tucson.

Puppies found in pillowcase on Blue Ridge Parkway

Animal control officials in Haywood County are taking care of seven newborn puppies after they were found tied up in a pillowcase and left on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Area media outlets report the puppies appeared to be two days old when they were found Sept. 5.

Woman drowns in pool near Myrtle Beach

A woman has drowned in a swimming pool near Myrtle Beach.

Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden tells area media outlets that the body of 31-year-old Linda Thompson of Myrtle Beach was found in a community pool in the Arrowhead community west of Myrtle Beach shortly before midnight Tuesday.

Dad accused of killing five children returns to SC

The man accused of killing his five children and dumping their bodies in Alabama has been returned to South Carolina to face murder charges.

Lexington County sheriff’s spokesman John Allard says Timothy Ray Jones Jr. was driven to the jail Thursday afternoon. Allard says his first court appearance is Friday.

NC Senate candidates largely back more airstrikes

Kay Hagan and Thom Tillis are largely supportive of the direction of President Barack Obama’s plan to expand military airstrikes and help forces fight the Islamic State militant group.
