SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — There are more ways to help those impacted by Helene in western North Carolina this week, but the needs are changing as the temperatures are expected to drop later this week.

There are two drop off locations for donations in Southport open Monday through Wednesday.

Jeff Moss, the owner of College Hunks Moving in Brunswick County, dropped off more than 7,500 pounds of donations on Sunday to Operation Air Drop and Winkler’s Grove Baptist Church in Hickory. Based on what he saw, Moss said they cannot stop.

Moss said with temperatures expected to drop this week, rescue coordinators are asking for sleeping bags, blankets, coats, gloves, baby formula, baby bottles and canned food.

The trailers will be available for drop off Monday from noon to 7 p.m. and Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the marina in Saint James and “Made New” at Lowes Foods in Southport.

Moss plans to deliver collected items to Hickory Distribution sites on Thursday.

State officials say one of the best ways to help Western North Carolina recover is with a monetary donation.  North Carolina has established the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund which is managed by United Way of North Carolina. Click here to make a monetary donation.
