Freezing rain creates ‘ghost apples’ in Michigan orchard

MICHIGAN (WOOD/CNN) — Widespread freezing hit western Michigan this week, leaving behind something pretty cool in area orchards. This is what’s being called a “ghost apple.”

Andrew Sietsema spotted the formation in Kent County while pruning apple trees on Wednesday.

Sietsema said that the freezing rain coated rotten apples, creating a solid icy shell around them.

He said when he pruned the trees, many of the frozen apples fell off the trees, ice and all.

However, a few of them were left looking like what you see in the photos above.
