Meteorologist Monique Robinson says ‘farewell’ to WWAY

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — After two years of covering weather and news across southeastern North Carolina, Monique Robinson says ‘goodbye’ to WWAY.

“Two years ago, I packed my SUV and drove nearly 600 miles to Wilmington, North Carolina to fulfill my dreams of being a meteorologist, but there was so much more in store for my journey,” Robinson said, during her last Sunday evening show. “I became a teacher, a mentor, an emcee, a host, a master’s student, a storyteller, a content creator, a creative, a friend, a neighbor and, of course, a meteorologist.”

Nearly two months after Robinson started her position as the weekend meteorologist/reporter at WWAY, Hurricane Florence swept the Cape Fear. She along with her WWAY team received recognition by the Associated Press(AP) for continuing coverage of the storm. In addition, Robinson received a 2nd place AP Award in Public Affairs for her story on how the children in Pender County were impacted by that storm.

Robinson was an active community member in the Cape Fear by emceeing events from the New Hanover County NAACP MLK Breakfast to the Wilmington Ballet Nutcracker. She was also the Grand Marshall for the 2019 Navassa Independence Day Parade.

She has also been a keynote speaker at local graduation ceremonies, church events and youth group programs. In addition, she has visited many local schools to teach meteorology to students.

Robinson also spent time working with and mentoring girls at the Girl’s Leadership Academy of Wilmington and tutoring students at UNC-Wilmington.

In 2019, Robinson started an original weekly weather segment called “Weather Wise” to explain weather terms to viewers.

Upon leaving WWAY, Robinson plans to continue her studies as a master’s student in Applied Meteorology at Mississippi State University.

“Someone recently asked me: ‘what am I going to miss the most about the Cape Fear?’,” Robinson said. “And, of course, it’s all of you. From Hurricane Florence to this coronavirus pandemic, we’ve been through this together and you all have sent in letters, emailed me, and stopped me in the grocery store to remind me of what impact I’ve had on you.”

Robinson’s last day at WWAY will be Wednesday.

“Thank you for inviting me into the Cape Fear Family with open arms,” Robinson said. “Please pray for me as I take my next step.”
