Storm-driven swells attract surfers to Wrightsville Beach

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — With both Tropical Storm Imelda and Hurricane Humberto churning in the Atlantic, wave heights at local beaches are increasing and one community is jumping right in.

Surfers put on their wet suits, grabbed their boards and dove into the ocean to take advantage of the bigger waves on Monday in Wrightsville Beach.

Ben Moore has been surfing since he was about 5 years old and he doesn’t recommend inexperienced surfers to start out with these waves.

Moore said he had fun catching a few waves Monday afternoon.

“First of all, when the storms out here the waves are a lot bigger, and we don’t get to see big waves very often. So, it’s a lot more fun when the waves are bigger. Surfing as a whole is a lot of fun just being out there with the water and mother nature, it’s different every single time and that’s what keeps us coming back,” Moore said.

Waves in the surf zone are expected to increase with 5-8 ft breakers along the east facing beaches where a high surf advisory will begin 8am Tuesday through midnight Thursday.
