Sustainable Summer Campaign urges community to cut plastic waste and protect oceans

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Plastic Ocean Project has been encouraging people to reduce their plastic use through their two-month Sustainable Summer campaign.

Emily Mulvihill is the operations director with Plastic Ocean Project whose mission is to find solutions to the plastic pollution crisis.

To help reduce the amount of plastic waste, be mindful of what material you are using. Instead of using single-use plastic, use reusable bags, cups, utensils, and straws.

Mulvihill says this change can go a long way.

“Whether you are just starting out or have been practicing sustainable lifestyles for several years, your impact greatly matters, and it helps for us to see the change that we desperately need for our planet,” Mulvihill said.

Mulvihill adds plastic ingestion, and entanglement impacts organisms and ecosystems. To help with the crisis, clean up after yourself as well as pick up any litter you see.

As part of the Sustainable Summer campaign, local businesses are donating a portion of their sales to Plastic Ocean Project on select dates.

The full list of dates can be found here: Sustainable Summer – PLASTIC OCEAN PROJECT.
