UNCW, Scottish Society of Wilmington to host 3rd annual bagpipe workshop and recital

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW and the Scottish Society of Wilmington will be hosting the third annual bagpipe festival this weekend.

It will be held at the UNCW Cultural Arts Building on Sunday, Feb. 11, featuring two workshops for novice and experience bagpipers.

“Wilmington was one of the destinations for Celtic immigrants to this country in the nineteenth century,” UNCW music professor Daniel Johnson said. “This event is co-sponsored by the Scottish Society of Wilmington, a non-profit group that keeps Scottish music and culture alive and thriving throughout the Cape Fear region. Fans of “Outlander” might make connections to NC locations from the books and TV series as well.”

Johnson said the bagpipe can play all sorts of music.

“Usually, people only think of “Amazing Grace” and “Scotland the Brave,” but there is so much more in the bagpipe’s musical repertoire. Slow airs, folk songs, reels, jigs, and hornpipes are just a few other examples,” Johnson said.

There will be a recital performance by top-notch piper Bill Caudill. He is the piping instructor at St. Andrew’s University in Laurinburg and a professional piper with decades of experience and a national reputation. The recital is at 4 p.m., and tickets are $10.

The pre-recital workshops are at 1 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. for the beginner and experienced levels. Those tickets are $30. The bagpipe demonstration is at 3:15 p.m. and is free.
