Search widens for missing Appalachian State student

Volunteers from Forsyth County are joining in the search for an Appalachian State University student who has been missing for a week.

The Charlotte Observer reports volunteers from Kernersville were preparing on Wednesday to walk along the Mountains to Sea Trail, a 900-mile route of footpaths beginning in the Blue Ridge Mountains, to look for Anna Marie Smith. The 18-year-old freshman from High Point was last seen on the campus in Boone on Sept. 3.

Group: NC restrictions deny hundreds of votes

An election reform group says two specific portions of North Carolina’s new voting law prevented hundreds of people from having their ballots counted during the May primary.

Democracy North Carolina held a news conference Wednesday to remind people about the voting restrictions and to urge people to register to vote before the Oct. 10 deadline for the November election.

NC prosecutor weighs reopening infamous 1983 case

A North Carolina prosecutor says the wishes of the victim’s family and the number of pending cases will help him determine whether to pursue charges against another suspect in a notorious 1983 murder case.

A judge’s decision last week to free Henry McCollum from death row and Leon Brown from a life sentence after 30 years hinged largely on Robeson County District Attorney Johnson Britt’s conclusion that new DNA evidence negated the case put forward at their trials for Buie’s slaying.

Panel considers parole for NC officer’s killer

A North Carolina panel is considering whether to grant parole to a man convicted of killing a Clayton police officer 32 years ago.

WRAL-TV reported the North Carolina Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission heard from witnesses on Tuesday about the possibility of releasing 64-year-old Bobby Earl Smith.

Media outlets plan NC Senate debate without Hagan

A television news outlet and North Carolina’s two largest newspapers will hold a debate next month in the U.S. Senate race even if Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan doesn’t participate.

Time Warner Cable News North Carolina says it will air a live debate Oct. 21. The Charlotte Observer and The News & Observer of Raleigh also are producing the debate. The cable channel says Republican Thom Tillis and Libertarian Sean Haugh have agreed to participate if they meet criteria.

Appeals court sets quick date on NC voting law

A federal appeals court is hurrying to hear arguments in a case challenging changes to North Carolina voting law.

The new law is considered one of the toughest in the country and critics say it will suppress minority voter turnout.
