Wilmington-based film is now streaming to Peacock subscribers
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — After sitting down for the first time in 2014 to create the script, eleven years later, a Wilmington-based film is now streaming to millions on the streaming platform Peacock.
The coming-of-age film Drought is about siblings from the south experiencing a drought.
The youngest brother Carl, who is on the autism spectrum, becomes fascinated with the weather and forecasts a storm coming. So, they chase the storm in an ice cream truck!
As April is autism awareness month, filmmakers and actresses Megan Petersen and Hannah Black think it is even more important for the story to be told.
“A movie can be made with authentic representation. Our actor who plays the actor is an autistic actor and I think it is really important that people cast authentically, and we are really proud,” Petersen said.
“I hope that there will be more authentic representation. Not just with autism. But other sorts of folks too, whether it is cerebral palsy, or I don’t know, anything in that regard,” Black shared.
As Drought is a community-backed film, the filmmakers believe the release to Peacock subscribers is an accomplishment for the entire community.
