Chief Meteorologist

Email Lee

Lee joined WWAY in August 2019 as chief meteorologist. You can see him weeknights providing the latest forecasts for the Cape Fear.  He is a 23-year veteran of television weather… coming from WSAV tv in Savannah, Georgia where he worked for nearly 2 decades after starting his career at KIMT in Mason City, Iowa in 1999.

He is a 1998 graduate of the atmospheric sciences/meteorology program at UNC-Asheville. Lee has worked on the academic side as well… teaching meteorology courses at Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University for over 17 years while in Savannah.

Growing up in southeast Virginia… Lee fell in love with the North Carolina coast at a young age and is happy to be closer to home and enjoying the challenges of forecasting the ever-changing weather here in the Cape Fear.

Lee is active in the community and enjoys talking weather to school students and civic groups when the opportunity arises. He also helps areas residents understand the dangers of hurricane season through preparedness events.

He is very passionate about giving back to the community and is proud of the new WWAY 3 degree guarantee program… which benefits area nonprofits and charities each month.

On his time off… Lee enjoys the beach, travelling, cooking, reading, sports and movies. He also loves trying new cafes and restaurants. One of his favorite foods is seafood! He also likes to fish on occasion.

If you see Lee around town… he loves to talk weather so say hello! You can always drop him a line at LHaywood@wwaytv3.com as well.
