NWS warns of jellyfish, rip currents around Carolina Beach

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a beach hazard statement until 8 p.m. because of jellyfish and rip currents at Pleasure Island.

The statement says lifeguards have observed an unusual amount of Portuguese Man of War in the waters around Carolina Beach. Portuguese Man of War are dangerous jellyfish with long tentacles that can cause blistering and extreme pain if one comes in contact with these creatures, the NWS says. Forecasters warn anyone who goes into the water to be careful and seek attention from a lifeguard if you get stung.

The NWS also warns there is also a moderate risk of rip currents in the area.

The NWS says a beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as rip currents, longshore currents, sneaker waves and other hazards create life-threatening conditions in the surf zone. Caution should be used when in or near the water.
