The state Division of Environmental Health today lifted a water quality swimming alert at an ocean-side site in Brunswick County. The alert affected waters at the public beach access located at the east end of Holden Beach.

The alert affects waters at the public beach access located at the east end of Holden Beach. Samples collected yesterday show test results of 111 enterococci per 100 milliliters of water, which exceeds the state and federal single-sample standard of 104 enterococci per 100 milliliters for Tier 1 high usage sites. Swimming areas are classified based on recreational use and are referred to as tiers.

A water quality swimming alert is in effect in Brunswick County. State health officials found high levels of bacteria in the Cape Fear River at the beach area near the municipal pier in Southport.
