Cameron Art Museum announces winter programs

The Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington is kicking off the new year with a huge list of programming for children and adults.  The events include Martin Luther King holiday programming for kids, homeschooling help, painting classes, readings, yoga, and the return of Jazz@cam.

Family Promise of the Lower Cape Fear looks to a world in which every family has a home, a livelihood, and the chance to build a better future.  It is celebrating 25 years of providing case management, transitional housing, and emergency shelter to families in need.  The 25th Anniversary Celebration Low Country Boil has a happy hour, dinner, and entertainment from comedian Orlando Jones.  

Seniors compete for beauty queen title

The time to be a beauty queen doesn't have to end after the age of 25 or even 65. Thanks to the Ms. North Carolina America Pageant women 60 years old and over can still vie for the title.

One dead, another hospitalized after Columbus County shooting

One man is dead, another is hospitalized after a shooting in Columbus County. The incident happened early Sunday morning. Investigators say after the driver, Rodney Simms was shot, his car ran into a wooded area off Highway 701 just outside of Whiteville. Simms was taken to the hospital but died shortly after.

New legislation ups landfill fees

Last week state lawmakers passed legislation that would make it tougher for new landfills to be built in North Carolina. Many people are happy about the environmental benefits of the measure that now awaits Gov. Easley's signature to become law. But those benefits could eventually cost you more money.

Local veterans hold weekend event at Hugh MacRae Park

videoIt's the first event of its kind here in Wilmington. Local veterans spent Saturday at Hugh MacRae Park to get to know each other and share their stories. Bob Page was a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne and served in the military for 33 years. He had the opportunity to spend time with other local veterans at a get-together.

Coast Guard celebrates milestone

The US Coast Guard celebrated a milestone this weekend. It was the organization's 217th birthday. Back on August 4, 1790 Congress authorized the construction of ten vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling and protect the collection of the federal revenue.

Teen robbery suspect facing charges

A 16-year-old Castle Hayne boy is facing armed robbery charges after allegedly robbing three people at gunpoint. Investigators say the incidents happened Saturday night around 11 o'clock in downtown Wilmington.

Sewer repair project continues

The sewer repair project in the Bradley Creek section of New Hanover county resumed Monday. The work had been suspended because of three spills in the area. Crews caused the spills while trying to repair the pipe that runs through the Wrightsville Green community off of Greenville Loop Road. But repair crews have been cleared to resume pumping sewage through bypass lines while they insert a new liner into the old pipe.
