The Fred Lynch Invitational tips off on Monday at six different locations in New Hanover County. 50 high school basketball teams will be competing in the three day event. The Ashley boys basketball team won't be competing in the event as the Screaming Eagles are in the middle of a coaching change. Coastal Christian High School held a signing ceremony on Thursday for four student athletes. We have a full report on that. In baseball the season is still young, but the Wilmington Sharks are winless after three games in the Coastal Plain League. Full story...

More than a month ago Ashley High School dismissed its basketball coach. Since then we've been getting emails and phone calls from supporters of David Rutledge as well as detractors. Today this controversy went to a new level when some students walked out of class in protest. Full story...

Former NFL tight end Alge Crumpler will be returning to Wilmington this weekend. The New Hanover High graduate heads this year's induction class for the 2014 Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame. On Wednesday we addressed the home scoring drought for the Wilmington Hammerheads. On Wednesday the NCHSSA adopted new guidelines concerning the mercy rule for high school football and basketball. WWAY's Chasity Melvin will be inducted into the NC State Athletic Hall of Fame in October. Melvin was a standout basketball player for four years in the 1990's under the late Kay Yow. Full story...
