videoHoggard and New Hanover both had dominant performances in boys basketball action on Tuesday night. Hoggard cooled off Ashley while New Hanover clubbed Laney. WWAY's Monday night sports - January 13

videoWhiteville High swept South Columbus on Monday in high school hoops. We had highlights from both games on WWAY. Brett Blizzard continues to scorch the nets in Italy. Blizzard pumped in 18 in his team's victory over the weekend. UNCW continues to slide in the national RPI rankings in basketball for both men and women. Plus more!

Weekend sports update

The season is over for the Carolina Panthers. The San Francisco 49ers advance in the playoffs. WWAY's Chasity Melvin was honored in Cary on Saturday by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association for being of the best athletes in the state. Saturday was the first day Duke, North Carolina & NC State all lost on the same day since 1996 in men's basketball. Both UNC Wilmington basketball teams continued their losing streaks this weekend. videoFriday's Full Court Press featured a ceremony at Hoggard for Trevor Singleton. It's possible the senior may have played his last game in a Hoggard uniform. On Friday night we had loads of high school basketball action from Wilmington. We also had hoops from Burgaw, Leland and Tabor City. We went regional or you could say viral with our play of the week that featured a shattered backboard.

Saturday sports update

Buzz Peterson's basketball squad opened the conference schedule with a home loss on Saturday. James Madison edged UNCW at Trask Coliseum. The CFCC women's basketball team remains undefeated. The Cape Fear Academy Challenge concluded on Saturday. Former Laney swimmer Stephen Coetzer is back on top of the podium where he belongs!
