6 ACC teams make NCAA tourney field - plus a Laney grad & NHHS grad too

Two basketball players who call Wilmington home will be playing in the "Big Dance" this week. This will be David Pellom's last chance to compete for a national title. Elijah Wilson hopes it will be the first of four. They'll be joined by six teams from the ACC.

UNC Wilmington eliminates Army with triple play

Corey Dick homered and had three of UNC Wilmington's 16 hits, and the Seahawks eliminated mistake-prone Army from the NCAA tournament Saturday with a 9-5 victory that ended on a bizarre triple play.

videoOn Tuesday we had wall to wall coverage of high school sports from around the region. We featured the top boys lacrosse team in Wilmington, Cape Fear Academy, the defending state champion baseball team from Whiteville along with baseball, softball and soccer involving Ashley and New Hanover.

Cardinals claim NCAA basketball title

It was a tremendous college basketball game between two outstanding teams at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. It resembled a classic heavyweight championship boxing match. In the end the Louisville Cardinals prevailed over the Michigan Wolverines.

videoOn Monday NC State introduced Wes Moore as the new leader of the pack for women's basketball. Moore replaces Kellie Harper. Former East Bladen Eagle football standout Desmond Bryant purchased a variety of sports equipment for the East Bladen football team. It seems like a broken record, but another UNCW baseball pitcher is a player of the week in the CAA. Plus more!

videoOn Sunday the Wilmington Sea Dawgs lost the 2013 basketball season opener at Blizzard Athletics, the new home of the Dawgs. Former New Hanover basketball standout Kadeem Allen made the Juco All-America team. On Sunday the UNCW baseball team held off Davidson. It was the 23rd win of the season for Mark Scalf's squad. videoOn Friday Hoggard pitcher Bryan Sammons pitched an outstanding game against arch-rival New Hanover. We were there to check out the action. On Friday we featured jiu jitsu world champion Hope Aikens of Wilmington. She's about to take her talents to Dubai. The UNCW baseball team lost on Friday. It's only the second time this season they've lost back to back games.

WWAY's Thursday sports - March 28 -- Trot Nixon throws out historic pitch, Hammerheads camp & Gatorade bath at North Brunswick

videoThursday was an historic day at Coastal Christian High School. WWAY co-host and World Series champion Trot Nixon threw out the first pitch at the new ballpark. North Brunswick ushered in the Dustin Medlin era in baseball. It ended with a splash. Camp is dismissed for the Hammerheads. It sure was fun! Plus more!
