As mentioned last week on WWAY Laney football & basketball standout Tariq Lane will not be returning to Buctown when school starts back. Lane has decided to move to Charlotte. Lane will also re-classify, which will add another year of high school eligibility to one of the most electrifying athletes in Wilmington. Day one of the Fred Lynch Invitational is complete. Six different venues are being used in New Hanover County to showcase this three day high school basketball summer event. Our coverage includes Quate McKinzie's return in a Pender High uniform. Earlier this month McKinzie received his first college scholarship offer from UNCW's Kevin Keatts. Full story...

The fourth season for Buzz Peterson as the UNCW men's basketball coach ended on Friday night. The Seahawks had a late lead against Hofstra, but UNCW wasn't able to hold on at the CAA Tournament. The season also ended for the East Columbus girls basketball team on Friday. CFCC & BCC will meet in the Region X title game on Saturday. Plus more! Full story...

On Tuesday we checked out practice at Trask Coliseum. Buzz Peterson and the UNCW Seahawks need to win four games over a four day stretch to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The odds are against the Seahawks, but stranger things have happened. The UNCW baseball team lost the final game of their west coast trip. On Tuesday we showcased former Hoggard pitcher Bryan Sammons. The lefty beat Clemson in his first career start. Regional play is underway for high school basketball. Check out our preview. Plus more. It's heartbreak city for fans of New Hanover High. The Panther Creek boys basketball team stuck a dagger in New Hanover at the final buzzer to end the season for the Wildcats. WWAY was there for the dramatic finish. On Friday's Full Court Press we had extensive state playoff coverage from five different games: New Hanover's heartbreaking loss at the buzzer, West Brunswick's nailbiting victory over Southern Durham, a Trask come from behind win against Whiteville, East Bladen's come from behind thriller against Southern Vance and another nailbiter from East Columbus where the Gators won by one point. On Wednesday it seemed like every team from our region won in the state playoffs. The New Hanover boys won, Whiteville boys, West Brunswick boys, Trask boys, East Bladen girls, East Columbus girls, Ashley girls and Laney girls all won. All of those teams will advance to the third round on Friday. The home schedule is now complete for the UNCW men's basketball team.
